This should be required reading for all who do counseling of any kind. It's a love story, but not like in a romance novel. It's real, gritty, true people with real struggles. I couldn't put it down, and when I finished I can't stop thinking about it. I can't believe the honesty of the author, the clearness of her search for what was true in her long-term yet troubled marriage. Anyone who is married or in a long-term relationship will recognize the self-chastising, the selfless actions, and the selfish yammering that all relationships go through. I began to see my own marriage in a new way, began to see the broken relationships of those around me with new insight and sadness. To be loved by a special someone, I have taken that for granted and I never will again. This is a love story about real people, and I can't recommend it more highly. Norman-Camp provides a unique perspective on grieving for a loved one, someone you love but don't always like. She describes her marriage to Micheal, whose alcoholism made it difficult for her to live with him. The marriage lasted 36 years with several, often long, separations, but they always loved each other. When Micheal found out he had terminal cancer, Norman-Camp took him back and took care of him until his death. Norman-Camp is very honest about her emotions, and about her own and Micheal's strengths and weaknesses. The book is fast-paced and well written. Highly recommended.
This book is very readable and engaging, especially considering the ponderous subject matter. The author's analysis of the grieving process is presented in a direct conversational manner with moments of levity which give a natural feel to the piece. She describes complex relationships and relates events in clear and concise terms. There are musings on the unknowability of the afterlife amidst longing for it and a case made, or at least hinted at, for guilt to be added to the stages of grief. It is really a love story and the two personalities involved are engrossingly and believably rendered.
